Tutoring

Using Structured Literacy and the Orton-Gillingham approach, I provide intervention for struggling readers with Dyslexia. My training in multi-sensory explicit, systematic programs recommended for reading, comprehension, and written language skills include Orton-Gillingham and LETRS. These methods of literacy instruction are evidence-based and shown to be effective for struggling readers with and without Dyslexia. With my knowledge of dyslexia and related issues, I am able to individualize treatment plans for each student and provide progress monitoring.

Orton-Gillingham

Orton-Gillingham is not a program, but an approach and has been around for many years. It is shown to improve outcomes with dyslexic and struggling readers and help them a reach their literacy goals. The key principles of this approach are:

Multi-sensory

Diagnostic & Prescriptive

Emotionally Sound

Cognitive

Language Based

Structured, Sequential, Cumulative

Explicit and Direct

Science of Reading

The Science of Reading is a body of scientific research as it relates to how we learn to read and issues that are related to reading and writing. Scientific research and evidence-based instruction, which includes structured literacy, is significant in improving learning outcomes. Studies have allowed researchers to discover why some struggle learning to read and others don’t.

Structured Literacy

Structured Literacy components include the five components of literacy:

Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.

Each concept is taught in a systematic, diagnostic and explicit way to meet each student’s individualized needs.

Reading Rockets does a great job of explaining the elements that go into Structured Literacy instruction.
